"Inspiring change" at our Annual Conference, 1-3 June 2016, Bornova (Izmir), Turkey

By Miriam Eisermann on 1 March 2016

Three months left before Energy Cities’ Annual Conference kick-starts in Bornova (Izmir) on the Turkish West coast!

From 1-3 June, decision-makers will explore - through the lens of local action - what it means to

  • further open up democratic processes for a new energy governance with stronger involvement of and benefit-sharing with new players
  • have stronger decision-making powers at the local level in order to decentralise the energy sector
  • divest from fossil fuels and reorient money towards local and renewable energy investments

The international urban agenda is on a new track since the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals last autumn and the Paris climate agreement in December. Now the energy transition is accepted as a global goal by the international community. To make change happen, we need to design new forms of cooperation between rural and urban areas, between cities, between people and sectors. More than ever it is time to work together for the common good and to strengthen leadership where it is the most needed: at the sub-national level.

This three-day conference, the biggest event of our network representing over 1,000 cities and regions all over Europe, will bring together several hundred policy-makers and practitioners engaged in the energy transition. Considering its rapid development, Turkey is a particularly interesting spot to discuss the transformation of urban landscapes.
